<image:caption>Lumeum is an exploration of the use of Virtual Reality (VR) as a life enrichment resource. Grounded in Reminiscence Therapy techniques, where individuals are exposed to media (music, photographs) and asked to recall past memories, Lumeum is applying a new medium to this common practice. Individuals are able to travel to favorite vacation locations, partake in past cherished hobbies, or walk through the streets of their home town. A primary goal is to enable via simplicity. Flaws cannot hide behind simplicity so Lumeum is continuously improving to provide the best experience possible. Built by Max Orozco and Noah Orozco Built with: Unity, AVPRO</image:caption>

<image:title>MockMRI - Virtual Reality Mock MRI</image:title>
<image:caption>According to Power, et al, head motion is a prominent concern for neuroimaging studies, especially involving pediatric, clinical or elderly populations. A practice called “scrubbing” is the elimination of unusable data that may confound results. Power states when working with normal populations about 10% of subjects are eliminated due to excess motion. That number can exceed 30% of data when working with pediatric or clinical studies. The ABCD study, the largest longitudinal pediatric brain development study to date, has collected 11,000 scans over the last 3 years. Excessive motion within that data set can result in 3300 scans rendered unusable. The economic impact can be substantial, assuming $600 per scan (industry standard) that would result in nearly two million dollars of lost data.</image:caption>

<image:title>MockMRI</image:title>
<image:caption>Mock scanners are fiberglass replicas of a MRI meant to desensitize fearful patients and prepare them for upcoming scans. After many years acquiring MRI data and working with patients, it is clear that a mock session produces quality data, reduces fearfulness, and creates a better experience for research volunteers. Unfortunately, mock scanners demand dedicate space and can cost tens of thousands of dollars, something many institutions are not prepared to invest in.</image:caption>

<image:title>MockMRI</image:title>
<image:caption>I decided to build a Virtual Reality Mock Scanner using the specifications of USC’s Institute of Neuroimaging and Informatics. Requiring little space and for the cost of an off the shelf HMD, any institute can have a mock scanner. The experience includes an introduction to the scanning room, audio recordings for the sounds of an MRI and a POV from within the scanner with visual triggers when excessive head movement occurs prompting the user to stay still. The goal is to provide researchers with a tool to help improve data quality and prepare patients for a real MRI with an approachable VR training.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inspired by Doblin’s 10 type of Innovation and the ever growing domination of the Internet platforms (Google, Facebook, Amazon) as distribution channels. I began thinking of legacy infrastructure that hasn’t changed in some time. It was during a walk that I imagined Toy Vending Machines (TVM) as individual nodes in a nationwide distribution network with the exact same user interface (UI). How can I tap into an existing network and link individual TVM nodes to create a new linked distribution channel? How can I change the UI to foster engagement?</image:caption>

<image:caption>I dropped pins on all the locations of TVMs in Highland Park, CA. In addition, began onboarding various businesses willing to install a TVM into their store. The first iteration is to connect them via scavenger hunt with clues taking users on a journey across the city to individual TVMs. Target date for intervention is February 14th, 2019.</image:caption>

<image:title>3D printed brain - 3D Printed Brain</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2017, I 3D printed my own brain (not to scale) from an MRI I had taken while working in academic neuroscience. The process is fairly simple, the ultimate goal is change the file format from DICOM (medical standard) to STL or OBJ. There are also various tools to help you along the way, such as this Instructables I used as a reference. Alternatively, there is software that can do this all in one place. Although I’m not as fimilar, QIT, developed by Ryan Cabeen has a great UI and tools to do alot of cool analysis and imaging techniques on your brain. Ultimately, you’ll need a few pieces of software and alittle bit of skill. Software: FreeSurfer Fusion 360 Skills: Unix/Terminal</image:caption>

<image:title>3D printed brain</image:title>
<image:caption>The First step is changing the file format of a T2 scan from DICOM to NIFTI. dcm2nii tool is in the MRIcron library: Find it here. The next step is to reconstruct the image in Freesurfer and skull strip the image, isolating brain tissue. Freesurfer has a ton of documentation and tutorials to help along the way. Use the code below to reconstruct the image. Any excess dura can be cleaned up in Fusion360. recon -all -s FILENAME -all -i Reconstruction will create various files including meshes of each hemisphere. The next step is to convert the rh.pial (right hemisphere) and lh.pial (left hemisphere) to 3D printable files, STL or OBJ. Use mris_convert to change file format. mris_convert PathToPialFilesYouWantToConvert/rh.pial rh.obj</image:caption>

Diffusion Tensor Imaging is a technique that allows for mapping and quantification of white matter tracts. The aim of this paper is look at 10 regions of interest and quantify their timing and magnitude of development across childhood and adolescence per intracellular volume fraction (FICVF). FICVF is believed to measure axon density therefore an increase in FICVF is likely a reflection of axon diameter and/or myelination. The magnitude and timing of white matter development vary by brain region, we found cingulate gyrus develop earliest while corticospinal tract developing latest. Link to PDF</image:caption>

<image:caption>Novel Behavioral Paradigm for Assessing Performance in Children with Dyslexia This paper introduces an fMRI task paradigm we created that incorporates dynamic difficulty in orthographic and phonologic word recognition. As participants select consecutive correct or incorrect responses the task gets harder or is simplified, respectively. This is meant to address a confound in many task design paradigms where motivation is not taken into consideration. For example, a dyslexic participant when faced with numerous consecutive difficult questions may become frustrated, any future errors maybe attributed to motivation rather than a lack of reading skill. We found an accuracy range similar across groups and difference in reaction time in the dyslexic group. Link to PDF</image:caption>

<image:caption>Characterizing Functional Reading Networks in Children with Dyslexia With this paper we looked at the methodologies that normal vs dyslexic children use to read. We used an fMRI task where participants were asked to choose either the proper orthographic (spelling) or phonological (pronunciation ) of various words. Across the behavioral tasks we found what is to be expected, that dyslexia children are at reading deficit (reaction time, accuracy and overall difficulty reached) compared to normal developing children. However, we are interested in the techniques used to read (orthographically vs phonemically), we found an interaction between groups and task when looking at difficulty level. We also found that for the Dyslexic group there was no significant activation overlap compared to the Control group for mean activation. However, this maybe a result of insufficient statistical power and sample size. Alternatively, the activation threshold applied maybe too stringent to illuminate overlaps between groups. <image:caption>Per 2017 Census American Community Survey residents of my hometown, East Los Angeles, compose of 48% high school graduates with 6% containing a bachelors degree or higher. The education system has failed East Los Angeles. Exploratory learning has been a powerful tool for myself throughout my youth and adulthood. I have been a member of several makerspaces in San Francisco and Los Angeles, which provide access to tools and a community of cooperative creation. After the local makerspace Null Space labs moved 16 miles away, there was no community resources to access prototyping tools. I decided to open my garage and tools to the community to create and participate in exploratory learning. We currently comprise of 20 members of the East LA Makerspace who meeting biweekly to discuss projects and build. www.eastlamakerspace.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Japanese woodblock printing and Lithography is a process of creating a relief on wood, limestone or linoleum in order to make impressions of the image onto other mediums. A monochromatic image may only take a single block, whereas images like that to the right of Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa may need dozens of blocks to create to add color or depth features. I ventured to reverse engineer the printing process and isolate planes of depth in common images. Using Adobe Suite Photoshop and Illustrator I separated planes in the images, laser cut prints and wood along the same lines and placed spacers between each plane, creating a greater sense of depth. A future direction would be printing at human scale so someone could “walk through” the image.</image:caption>

One important experiment was The Horse In Motion, where Muybridge determined that during full stride there is a moment when all four hooves of a horse are off the ground. I wanted to recreate this iconic experiment with the construction of a zoetrope using Muybridge’s images. Using Photoshop and Illustrator I isolated the form of the horse mid gallop, cut the pieces from MDF and build a support structure. Using a record player and strobe light I was able to recreate Muybridge’s foundational research.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At the 2019 Reality Virtually Hackathon 2019 our team Bodies-In-Motion created a VR Physical Therapy Aid. Our goal was use Computer Vision to create a real time virtual avatar in VR space to inform the user on their movement and correct improper form against a virtual model. We used PoseNet, a machine learning model, in conjunction with TensorFlow.js , for real time human pose estimation. The benefits of these open-source frameworks are that they can run on a browser, therefore one can use their laptop or smart phone as a Computer Vision device. The pose estimations are then sent to the Unity Engine via websockets using Node.js.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The user is now able to see their real time body movement in Virtual Reality. We then created visual guides of a body performing an exercise (standing at rest, hands up, and squat) with points of interest for the user to match. As user matches the visual guide, the points of interest turn from red to blue. We used Euclidean distance to measure the difference between the user and the visual guide to inform the color changing visualization. Here is the Github to the project. <image:title>2nd Mock MRI - MRIs are scary procedures for kids.</image:title>
<image:caption>In pediatrics, using an MRI can be a daunting and scary procedure for the children about to undertake the exam. In research scenarios, literature states that when working with pediatric subjects up to 30% of MRI data is unusable due to excess motion or fear during the scan. The economic impact of this loss of data accounts for tens of million dollars of research funding annually. For clinically necessary scans, a child will be sedated if they are unable to stay still or comply with behaviors necessary for the procedure. 4 million children are sedated annually for medical procedures and evidence suggest .1% of those experience severe adverse effects as a result of anesthesia. Sedation and the side effects of the anesthesia exposed to patients dramatically increase the danger of the procedure, increasing hospital liability and procedures take twice as long as when the subject is awake.</image:caption>

After the MIT Reality Virtually Hackathon I realized the power of storytelling and how difficult it can be applying my education and breaking past habits. The first iteration was cold and clinical, a reflection of my time in academia. I reimagined the experience, focused efforts on user testing with kids, received feedback from clinicians, and most importantly connected to the users kids in hospital settlings and the clinicians administering the Mock Scanner.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Virtual Reality MRI Mock Scanner is a virtual exposure therapy experience for children who are about to undergo an MRI. The child simply puts on a virtual reality headset, and is shown a CGI recreation of the MRI experience. The child is familiarized with a virtual radiology suite, is habituated to the sounds of the scanner, and is trained to stay still during an MRI in order to get quality images. Furthermore, using the native motion tracking sensors in virtual reality headsets, the VR MRI Mock Scanner can measure the child’s head movement and provide visual stimuli telling the participant when excessive motion has taken place.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What is the ‘next’ next thing in immersive media? We were tasked with thinking 3-5 years in the future and anticipate the state of immersive media as applied to health and wellbeing. More than a hackathon or ideation sprint, this IMC is a futurist challenge requiring examination of contemporary pain points and limitations and looking to the future of technology, media infrastructure and storytelling. Building upon our work with older adults and reminiscence therapy, we built features using Machine Learning that could add great value to the future of VR.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Human Image Synthesis is technology applied to make believable and even photorealistic renditions of human-likenesses. The obvious ethical considerations have put neural networks like Deepfake front and center in the debate of the future of news and even our communal understanding of the truth. For example, it is believed that the government of Gabon used Deepfake technology to uphold the rule of an ailing dictator. We wanted to explore of the use of Deepfake technology to create more meaningful emotion connections with a HMD covering one’s face. Applying the technology to my own face, we made the HMD “disappear” allowing a more human connection to take place between users in VR.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Real time human pose estimation is a machine learning model using computer vision to detect human figures in images and videos. Inspired by my build at the 2019 MIT Reality Virtually Hackathon, we wanted to use posenet in order to provide a visual aid for physical therapy. Current HMDs like the Oculus Quest use computer vision for registration. Adding a feature like gamified physical therapy can add much benefit to people who need a little more motivation with their PT or everyday exercise (me included).</image:caption>

<image:title>MitVrHackathon20 - Overview</image:title>
<image:caption>Lewis Gardner and I had met at the ‘19 MIT hackathon and decided to compile a team to address a pressing healthcare issue. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the leading cause of cognitive decline in the western world, affecting a third of Americans over age 85. The disease slowly degrades memory and cognitive skills, hindering the ability to carry out daily activities, inevitably leading to full-time care and death. Inspired by recent publications in Alzheimer's disease that emitting light at 40 Hz frequency can drastically reduce beta-amyloid plaques in various areas of the brain in rodent models of Alzheimer's Disease. With similar effects when light is absorbed through the optic nerve, it seemed like a VR or AR headset would a fantastic piece of technology to explore. What we built quickly expanded from a use case of 40 Hz to other methods that spatial computing could assist the lives, and the lives of caregivers, for people suffering from AD. Blinkenlights is a AR assistant that accompanies individuals with AD throughout their disease progression to have a better quality of life by promoting independence, assisting with memory recall and encouraging social interaction.</image:caption>

<image:title>MitVrHackathon20 - Features</image:title>
<image:caption>Temporal & Spatial Reminder System provides users with temporal or location-tagged reminders to assist with day-to-day activities. Engagement platform for team of caregivers and remote family members to engage in care for the individual by sending reminders, adding events to calendar and send voice memos, and monitor user's task progress. Facial Recognition & Memory Recall (Reminiscence) uses facial recognition to help users identify people and pulls up shared videos and images for user to review and trigger memory recall of relationship. When we implemented Facial Recognition it was the first time ever to run it locally on a Magic Leap AR device. With the help of the official Magic Leap Dev Support team, we published the build and the code to the Magic Leap Store.</image:caption>

<image:title>MitVrHackathon20 - Research</image:title>
<image:caption>We conducted secondary research and interviewed 3 family members of Alzheimer patients, along with two experts (neurologist & PhD candidate in Gerontology and Dementia studies) to better understand the problem space and identify user needs. Here are a few of our key findings: 1. Memory loss interferes with daily tasks such as medication compliance, turning off burner, and self care "She would...forget how many pills to take and so we had to monitor the pills" -_S.O. on her mother_ "Hard time with personal care/grooming" - _M.T. on his father_ 2. Social interaction slows down disease progression and helps the patients feel happier "Loneliness is a risk factor for depression which can cause a quicker decline. They would not take as good care of themselves if they're also experiencing depression. There is total loss of motivation to do so." - _AS, Corporate Director of Dementia Programs at Tutera Senior Living and Health Care "More visits from family, people who knew him and loved him [would help him feel happier and independent]" - _M.T. on his father_ 3. Photos and sounds are helpful in reminiscence therapy to help patients trigger memories "We really rely on their family photos. A lot of times, people will look at photos and go through them to make sure they still remember in early stages. Photos are good at sparking memory." - _A.S.</image:caption>

<image:title>MitVrHackathon20 - Ethical Considerations</image:title>
<image:caption>Having serverless facial recognition in our society has obvious social implications. One can imagine the impact on privacy if police or another entity had the power to reference our faces to past discrepancies or legal problems. With that said, technological innovation is inevitable, the only way to combat illicit uses of technology is to educate everyone on technological literacy and democratize the tools so gate keepers never hold all the power. If you are interested in implementing facial recognition in a Magic Leap device, check out our open source github.</image:caption>
